Despite the pandemic, Fall sports persevered with a few changes to ensure it was done safely. Soccer players, cross country runners, and tennis competitors participated while wearing masks, their seasons were shortened, and regional and state championships were canceled. Despite best efforts the following sports were pushed to March 2021: football, cheerleading and volleyball. Here are the Fall seasons, recapped!
Boys Varsity Soccer had the same goal this year as they do every year ¨win sectionals¨ and to end the season with a winning record. They were a younger team, led by upperclassmen. Senior Jake said they had to work hard at building team chemistry. They did this in a few different ways, with, ¨our annual hair dying and having a team dinner at Parker´s.¨ A favorite memory for Jake was after their first game against Newark. Smith said, ¨Newark was our first game with a full team and we ended up beating them 1-0… on the ride home the guys were excited and the atmosphere was awesome.¨ Congratulations on a great season, gentlemen!
Girls Varsity Soccer had the big goal of ¨creating good chemistry with the team.¨ They, too, were a younger team and most of them had not played together previous to the 2020 season. Despite some difficult challenges on the field, they prioritized not letting their record get to them, and instead focused on building team bonds. Senior Camryn’s favorite memory was senior night, ¨The seniors had a lot of fun riding on the firetruck.¨ These fierce competitors managed to keep their bond going all season, ¨We have a great bond between our teammates and always manage to keep a good attitude.” Fantastic job, ladies!
The Mynderse Cross-Country squad readied themselves for the 2020 season, working hard on their personal as well as team goals. Sophomore Faith had three major goals this year, ¨To get a best time, do well at sectionals, and come in the top ten in a race.¨ Faith was successful in accomplishing two of those goals multiple times this season, at separate matches. One the best meets the team had was at Red Creek when everyone had a great day, ¨Everyone beat their time from last year and got a personal best.¨ Some favorite memories from the season were, ¨when we carved pumpkins, played games on the bus, and walked the courses before a race.¨
The members of the Golf team also had both personal and collective goals. Their overall goal was to make it to sectionals, and the squad fell short of that by just one win. Sophomore Luke had some input on how the season went saying, ¨the season was great.¨ The team ended up having a 10-3 record.
Varsity Tennis had four goals for this season. Win sectionals, grow as a team, develop a strong chemistry and further develop their tennis skills. Senior Valerie had input on how team bonding went, ¨It was a little rocky at first but now we are stronger than ever and could not imagine it any other way.¨ Valerie´s favorite memory from this season was the senior celebration, enjoying the team-bonding it fostered. The team went on to be 10-1 with only one loss to Penn Yan.
