Looking for an exciting and intellectual club to join here at school? Think about Model UN! Mynderse Academy’s Model UN team began over forty years ago. The current advisor, Mr. Jones, has been a part of Model UN since 2001. In an interview, Mr. Jones expressed that he enjoys advising it as it lets students “put themselves out there.”
As the name suggests, students participate in mock United Nations conferences (also called MUN conferences). Our club travels to three conferences a year. Each student serves as a delegate from a country and goes to different committees that are a part of the real UN, such as the General Assembly or the World Health Organization. There, they work with students from other schools to propose solutions to different problems in the world through and writing papers.
This fosters an environment of cooperation and collaboration, and helps delegates build speaking skills that extend far beyond the end of the conference. If this sounds stuffy don’t worry – there’s a lot to lighten the mood, from “jar wars,” where each committee competes to raise the most money and win a prize, to flowers that can be sent along with humorous messages to your friends in other committees. Furthermore, there’s a lot of freedom to act like an adult at conferences – as Mr. Jones puts it, there’s “no micromanaging.”
If you are interested in joining us, listen for announcements in Fall 2020 about meeting in Mr Jones’s room, and we hope to see you there!
